For Homeowners > Contractor Referral Program

Who will install my doors, windows, and millwork?

J&C Adams offers a Qualified Contractor Referral Program to satisfy all your installation needs. After evaluating your project details and requirements, we will match you with a pre-screened, qualified local contractor and contact them on your behalf.  You will then be contacted directly by the contractor, at which point you can arrange to meet and discuss job details. Ultimately, it is your decision to work with the contractor we have recommended.

How does this benefit me?

By leaving installation to the experts (the contractors) our door and window specialists will have more time and opportunity to provide you with the best service possible. We will focus on your specific project needs, making sure no details are overlooked before the order is placed. We will involve the contractor, architect, designer and anyone else hired for the project to make sure everyone is on the same page. If needed, a trained salesperson can come to the jobsite to verify measurements or other information for the project.

In our 74 years in the industry, we have found that hiring a local contractor or builder offers you, the consumer, the best value for your dollar, and allows you to work with an expert familiar with the unique installation challenges and building needs of the New England area. Working with a general contractor also gives you access to other trained, quality professionals such as plumbers and electricians.

Why doesn’t J&C Adams offer installation services?

As a family owned and operated business through three generations, we believe strongly in the importance of supporting our local communities. Most of our trade customers are small, independent, often family-owned contracting businesses, experts in their field. Instead of bidding against them for installation services, we believe in supporting them to strengthen our community.

Guidelines for selecting a contractor

Choosing a contractor can be a challenging part of your remodeling project. Any referrals given out by J&C Adams are intended to help you in this search. Many of our customers locate a qualified contractor via word of mouth, Angie’s ListTM or other consumer service, or their local chamber of commerce.

J&C Adams has also provided the following guidelines to help you satisfy your search for the right contractor for your particular project. To be an informed consumer, we also suggest you:

Verify that the contractor has the proper license for the job. According to the Massachusetts Home Improvement Contractor Law, any contractor working on an owner-occupied, single-family or owner-occupied multi-family (up to 4 units) home must be registered with the Massachusetts Department of Public Safety’s Board of Building Regulations and Standards (BBRS). As of July 2008, anyone who does roofing, siding and window replacement must have a Home Improvement Registration and a Construction Supervisor’s License. To verify the contractor’s credentials, you can visit the Massachusetts office of Consumer Affairs web site.

  • Verify that the contractor has liability and worker’s compensation insurance. If someone gets hurt on your job and the contractor does not carry insurance, you could be liable! Ask to see the contractor’s proof of insurance, since the state licensing process does not require proof of insurance.
  • Ask the contractor for job references and contact those clients to see how the job went. Many contractors provide references right on their website.
  • Be a detective and check the Better Business Bureau, the Massachusetts Board of Building Regulations and Standards and the Attorney Generals’ Office to see if there are any formal complaints about the contractor.
  • Do not choose a contractor only according to the lowest bid. Make sure you compare bids line by line and consider other variables, such as experience and quality of materials, in the decision process.
  • Once you’ve chosen a contractor, get a written contract. Many homeowners have an attorney review the contract before signing. Remodeling contracts should include the contractor acting as the owner’s agent when applying for building permits. Registered Home Improvement Contractors are required by law to apply for all building permits covered by the Home Improvement law.
