2011 Energy Efficient Building Products Federal Tax Credit
The "Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization and Job Creation Act" signed into law 12/17/2010, extended the federal tax credit for certain energy efficient improvements. Here is a summary of the new credit:
-
The credit covers Energy StarR windows, exterior doors and skylights, and certain other products.
-
The qualifying products must be installed in the homeowner's existing primary residence; new construction is not eligible
-
The credit is for 10% up to $500 of the purchase price of the qualifying products--installation is not included.
-
Certain products are eligible for a limited amount of the credit: Windows and Skylights have a $200 cap, while exterior doors (including storm doors), are eligible up to $500
-
There is a Lifetime Cap of $500 in total credits that a homeowner can claim from Jan1, 2006 through Dec 31, 2011 for any combination of products. Therefore, if the homeowner already claimed less than the lifetime limit of $500, they can still claim the difference up to the individual caps on certain products.
-
The new credit is in effect for products installed in the homeowner's primary residence between Jan 1, 2011 and Dec 31, 2011
